A Critical Arrival

Perry Johnson's journey to recovery began unexpectedly one typical morning. He arrived at Frankfort Regional Medical Center’s Emergency Department (ED) by private vehicle, accompanied by his concerned family. As the family pulled up, they urgently requested assistance from our greeter, a dedicated nurse extern, to help get Perry out of the car.

Recognizing the Signs

Upon reaching the car, nurse extern Kailee Finch quickly recognized that Perry was exhibiting symptoms of a stroke. Her training and quick thinking led her to call for immediate assistance from a nurse. This swift action set in motion a series of life-saving events.

Immediate Response

Mackenzie Sawyer, RN promptly responded to the call for help. After assessing Perry's condition, Mackenzie called a Stroke Alert without hesitation. Cynthia Ford, unit clerk, well-prepared for such emergencies, called PBX to announce an overhead Stroke Alert. The ED team sprang into action, ready to provide the critical care Perry needed. Amy Knecht was the primary nurse and completed assessments timely and per protocols.

Rapid Diagnosis and Transport

Perry was immediately taken to the CT scan room, where the medical team confirmed a large vessel occlusion. Recognizing the urgency, transport was requested from Frankfort Fire & EMS, who arrived within 15 minutes. Perry was then swiftly transferred to the University of Kentucky Medical Center (UKMC) within an hour of his arrival at Frankfort Regional's ED.

Successful Intervention

At UKMC, Perry underwent a thrombectomy, a procedure to remove the clot causing the stroke. Remarkably, the surgeons extracted an approximately 2-inch clot, and the procedure successfully restored blood flow. This timely intervention was crucial to Perry’s recovery.

A Remarkable Recovery

Perry's story doesn't end there. Just a few days later, he returned to our ED, but this time with a smile and a story of recovery. We are thrilled to report that Perry is doing exceptionally well. In a testament to his resilience and the excellent care he received, Perry was discharged home and was back to enjoying his favorite activities, including cooking on the grill, within three days of his thrombectomy.

Gratitude and Teamwork

Perry Johnson's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of recognizing stroke symptoms and acting quickly. It highlights the incredible teamwork and dedication of Frankfort Regional's healthcare professionals, from the nurse extern and responding nurse to the entire ED team and the specialists at UKMC. Their coordinated efforts and prompt actions were pivotal in Perry's swift and remarkable recovery.

We are honored to have been a part of Perry’s journey and celebrate his return to health. His story serves as an inspiration and a testament to the life-saving power of timely medical intervention.
