Summer is a season of sun-soaked gatherings and grilling out. Amid all the cookouts and events, it can be tempting to help yourself to just one more hot dog or an extra scoop of ice cream. If it’s for the road, it doesn't count, right?

Think again. It is easy to succumb to the summer trap of over-indulging in fatty or salty foods. Choosing foods that are healthy for your heart is the key to looking and feeling your best.

Here are a few heart-healthy tips for your next summer cookout:

Choose chicken

Grilled chicken breasts are a healthier alternative to red meat, which can contain high amounts of cholesterol and saturated fat. Remove the skin of the chicken before cooking, add your favorite seasonings and enjoy a delicious and healthy source of protein!

Say no to salt

Processed or frozen food, such as hot dogs or pre-made hamburgers, often contain large amounts of salt. Try to limit your intake of these foods. Better yet, prepare your own lean cuts of meat with the fat drained off. A safe rule to follow is to limit your red meat portion to a size of a deck of playing cards.

Snack smart

Salty snacks are seemingly everywhere — be especially wary of chips and dips! Opt

for the vegetable tray instead, or take advantage of summer’s delicious fruit harvests like watermelon, berries and peaches. It’s as easy as slicing and serving.

Hydrate frequently

It’s important to stay hydrated during the peak summer months, especially if you spend time outside or engage in physical activities. Keep your body healthy by drinking plenty of water throughout the day. For a delicious, low-calorie twist, add your favorite fruits to a pitcher of water to infuse the flavors.
