Frankfort Regional Medical Center ophthalmologist, Irfan Ansari, MD, now provides the entire spectrum of retinal care to correct retina disease, including retina surgery.

The retina is the light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the inside of the eye and sends visual messages through the optic nerve to the brain. Patients with retina problems often don't notice they have a problem until they start losing their vision. Also, patients with diabetes have a higher risk for developing retina disease.

Disorders related to the retina include:

  • Macular pucker
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Retinal holes
  • Retinal detachment
  • Flashes and floaters
  • Detached and torn retinas

If not treated, retina disorders can lead to severe vision loss or blindness.

Surgery is often required to correct retina disease and is performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients will not see improved vision immediately. Rather, vision should gradually improve, and recovery from vitreoretinal surgery typically takes 3-4 weeks. It can take up to six months for the patient to regain their best vision.

Dr. Ansari sees patients for ophthalmology-related conditions at his office in Frankfort.
