Frankfort, KY (May 11, 2009) - May has been designated as "Better Hearing and Speech Month" according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Speech and language disorders affect 14 million Americans and hearing loss affects nearly 28 million individuals.

Speech, language and hearing disorders can take many forms and can limit academic achievement, social adjustment, and career advancement. An individual may be born with a speech, language or hearing disorder or it may be caused by accidental injury or illness.

Fortunately, most people with speech and language problems can be helped. Even if the problem cannot be eliminated, speech-language pathologists and audiologists can teach people strategies to help them cope. People may not fully regain their capacity to speak and understand or to hear, but with therapy people can live more independently.

Jan Weisberg, M.D., board certified otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat specialist), in partnership with the Rehab Center at Frankfort Regional Medical Center, will be providing a free hearing screen on Friday, May 29th from 1:00 - 3:00pm and a hearing and speech screening on Saturday, May 30th from 10:00am - noon. The screenings will be held at Dr. Weisberg's office at #5 Physicians Park in Frankfort near the hospital. An audiology technician will be on hand to provide the hearing screens and a speech-language pathologist will be on hand to provide the speech screen. Both screens are open to children and adults.
