Frankfort, KY (June 26, 2008) ' Frankfort Regional Medical Center is pleased to invite the public to view the Kentucky Organ Donor Quilt which will be on display in the main lobby of the hospital on Monday, June 30, 2008 from 9:30am to 3:00pm

The quilt memorializes those people in Kentucky who offered the 'Gift of Life' to others through organ and tissue donation and transplantation. Over 98,000 people are on the waiting list for a life-saving organ nationwide, and over 750 are residents of Kentucky.

One person's decision to become an organ and tissue donor can benefit as many as fifty lives. One donor can enhance or save the lives of one heart patient, one liver recipient, two lung patients, two kidney patients, one diabetic (pancreas), two people with impaired vision (corneas), three or four burn victims and numerous recipients of bone grafts.

During the display time there will be a table of information staffed by members of the Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates who will be able to answer questions and provide the community the opportunity to register on the newly created Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. The new registry enables residents to place their name on the registry, stating their wishes to become an organ donor. Previously, licensed drivers and ID card holders could make a commitment to organ and tissue donation by indicating their wish to donate on their driver's license application. Now it is necessary to take an additional step and sign the Kentucky Organ Donor Registry. Parental consent is required for individuals under the age of 18.
